Stars & Symbols

神煞 — The Symbolic Layer

Everything you've learned so far — the pillars, the Day Master, the Ten Gods, the interactions, the timing system, chart strength, and special structures — forms the core framework of Bazi. That framework is what you use to read the fundamental dynamics of a chart: who someone is, what they need, and how energy flows through their life.

But there's another layer on top of all that. Bazi also has a rich system of symbolic stars — markers that sit within the chart and point to specific qualities, tendencies, and life themes. Think of the core framework as the main storyline and the stars as the subplots. The main storyline tells you the big picture. The stars add texture, detail, and nuance.

Not every chart contains every star, and the stars don't override the core reading. But when a star is present, it adds something that the Ten Gods alone don't fully capture. This page covers the most important and commonly used stars in Bazi.

How Stars Are Found

Stars aren't random decorations. Each one is calculated from specific positions in your chart — usually from the Earthly Branches of one or more pillars. Some stars come from the Day Branch, some from the Year Branch, and some from the relationship between two branches. You look them up based on your chart rather than memorising formulas, and most Bazi calculators will identify which stars are present in your chart automatically.

The important thing is knowing what each star means when you see it, not necessarily how to calculate it from scratch.

The Major Stars
Nobleman
Gui Ren (贵人) — "Noble Person"

The Nobleman star is one of the most sought-after stars in Bazi. It indicates helpful people — mentors, supporters, benefactors, or anyone who comes into your life at the right time with the right kind of help. When this star is present, it suggests a person who naturally attracts support and goodwill from others.

There are actually two types of Nobleman, based on the Yin/Yang polarity of the Day Master:

Yang Nobleman (Tian Yi Gui Ren — 天乙贵人, "Heavenly One Noble Person"): The primary Nobleman star. Found based on the Day Branch or Year Branch. It represents powerful, well-timed assistance — the kind of help that arrives exactly when you need it most.

Yin Nobleman: A secondary level of helpful energy, less dramatic but still supportive.

In a reading, the Nobleman star suggests that the person has a natural safety net. Even in difficult times, someone tends to show up to help. If the Nobleman coincides with a favourable element, the support is especially strong. If it coincides with an unfavourable element, the help might come with strings attached or from unexpected sources.

Peach Blossom
Tao Hua (桃花) — "Peach Blossom"

The Peach Blossom star is probably the most well-known star in popular Chinese astrology. It relates to charisma, attractiveness, romance, and social magnetism. A person with Peach Blossom in their chart tends to be naturally appealing to others — not necessarily in a physical sense, but in the way they draw people in.

Lookup — based on Day Branch or Year Branch:
If Day/Year Branch is… Peach Blossom is
Shen (申) · Zi (子) · Chen (辰) Mao (卯, Rabbit)
Yin (寅) · Wu (午) · Xu (戌) You (酉, Rooster)
Hai (亥) · Mao (卯) · Wei (未) Zi (子, Rat)
Si (巳) · You (酉) · Chou (丑) Wu (午, Horse)

Having Peach Blossom doesn't automatically mean someone is unfaithful or overly flirtatious — that's a common misconception. It means they have a natural ability to attract and connect with people. This can manifest as popularity, artistic talent, social skill, or genuine romantic appeal. The context of the rest of the chart determines how this energy is expressed.

When Peach Blossom coincides with a favourable element, it tends to bring positive romantic and social opportunities. When it coincides with an unfavourable element, it can indicate complicated relationships or situations where attraction leads to trouble.

Travel Star / Horse Star
Yi Ma (驿马) — "Post Horse"

The Travel Star indicates movement, change, and restlessness. A person with this star tends to travel frequently, relocate, or live far from their birthplace. It can also indicate a career that involves travel, commuting, or constant change.

Lookup — based on Day Branch or Year Branch:
If Day/Year Branch is… Travel Star is
Shen (申) · Zi (子) · Chen (辰) Yin (寅, Tiger)
Yin (寅) · Wu (午) · Xu (戌) Shen (申, Monkey)
Hai (亥) · Mao (卯) · Wei (未) Si (巳, Snake)
Si (巳) · You (酉) · Chou (丑) Hai (亥, Pig)

Notice that the Travel Star always sits in a branch that clashes with the Peach Blossom branch for the same group — movement and attraction are often linked in Bazi.

The Travel Star isn't just about physical travel. It can also indicate mental restlessness, a desire for change, or a life path that involves frequent transitions. When activated by a Luck Pillar or Annual Pillar, it often triggers a move, a trip, or a significant change in environment.

Academic Star
Wen Chang (文昌) — "Literary Prosperity"

The Academic Star relates to intelligence, learning ability, and academic success. A person with this star tends to have a sharp mind, a natural aptitude for study, and the ability to absorb and articulate knowledge effectively.

Lookup — based on Day Stem:
Day Stem Academic Star is
Jia (甲, Yang Wood) Si (巳, Snake)
Yi (乙, Yin Wood) Wu (午, Horse)
Bing (丙, Yang Fire) & Wu (戊, Yang Earth) Shen (申, Monkey)
Ding (丁, Yin Fire) & Ji (己, Yin Earth) You (酉, Rooster)
Geng (庚, Yang Metal) Hai (亥, Pig)
Xin (辛, Yin Metal) Zi (子, Rat)
Ren (壬, Yang Water) Yin (寅, Tiger)
Gui (癸, Yin Water) Mao (卯, Rabbit)

When the Academic Star is present and well-supported, it suggests someone who does well in educational settings, has strong writing or communication skills, and can excel in intellectual or analytical work. It's particularly valued in charts where career potential involves teaching, writing, research, or scholarly pursuits.

General Star
Jiang Xing (将星) — "General Star"

The General Star indicates leadership ability, authority, and the capacity to command and organise. A person with this star tends to have a natural presence that others respect and follow. It's associated with decisiveness, strategic thinking, and the ability to handle pressure.

Lookup — based on Day Branch or Year Branch:
If Day/Year Branch is… General Star is
Shen (申) · Zi (子) · Chen (辰) Zi (子, Rat)
Yin (寅) · Wu (午) · Xu (戌) Wu (午, Horse)
Hai (亥) · Mao (卯) · Wei (未) Mao (卯, Rabbit)
Si (巳) · You (酉) · Chou (丑) You (酉, Rooster)

Notice that the General Star always falls on the middle branch of each Three Harmony group — the central point of the elemental frame.

The General Star is especially significant when it appears in the Day Branch, as it directly influences the person's core nature. It's commonly found in the charts of people who hold positions of authority, manage teams, or operate in high-pressure environments.

Solitary Star / Canopy Star
Hua Gai (华盖) — "Canopy"

The Solitary Star relates to introspection, spirituality, and unconventional thinking. A person with this star tends to be drawn to philosophy, religion, metaphysics, or any field that involves looking beyond the surface of things. They often have a rich inner world and a preference for solitude or small, meaningful gatherings over large social events.

Lookup — based on Day Branch or Year Branch:
If Day/Year Branch is… Solitary Star is
Shen (申) · Zi (子) · Chen (辰) Chen (辰, Dragon)
Yin (寅) · Wu (午) · Xu (戌) Xu (戌, Dog)
Hai (亥) · Mao (卯) · Wei (未) Wei (未, Goat)
Si (巳) · You (酉) · Chou (丑) Chou (丑, Ox)

Notice that the Solitary Star always falls on the Earth element branch within each Three Harmony group — the grounding, stabilising force.

The Solitary Star isn't negative, despite what its name might suggest. It indicates depth of thought and a tendency to seek meaning beyond the material world. Many scholars, monks, artists, and researchers have this star. When well-placed, it supports intellectual and spiritual achievement. When afflicted, it can contribute to isolation or difficulty connecting with others on a surface level.

Red Phoenix
Hong Luan (红鸾) — "Red Phoenix"

The Red Phoenix star is a romance and marriage indicator. When activated — usually by a Luck Pillar or Annual Pillar — it often signals a period when a significant romantic relationship begins or when marriage becomes likely. It's one of the most commonly used stars for timing relationship events.

Lookup — based on Year Branch:
Year Branch Red Phoenix is
Zi (子, Rat) Mao (卯, Rabbit)
Chou (丑, Ox) Yin (寅, Tiger)
Yin (寅, Tiger) Chou (丑, Ox)
Mao (卯, Rabbit) Zi (子, Rat)
Chen (辰, Dragon) Hai (亥, Pig)
Si (巳, Snake) Xu (戌, Dog)
Wu (午, Horse) You (酉, Rooster)
Wei (未, Goat) Shen (申, Monkey)
Shen (申, Monkey) Wei (未, Goat)
You (酉, Rooster) Wu (午, Horse)
Xu (戌, Dog) Si (巳, Snake)
Hai (亥, Pig) Chen (辰, Dragon)

The Red Phoenix doesn't guarantee marriage — it indicates that the conditions for a significant relationship are present. Whether that relationship materialises and how it turns out depends on the rest of the chart and the surrounding timing.

Heavenly Joy
Tian Xi (天喜) — "Heavenly Joy"

The Heavenly Joy star is closely related to the Red Phoenix and also relates to happy events — particularly engagements, marriages, pregnancies, and celebrations. It's generally considered a positive, joyful indicator.

Lookup — based on Year Branch (always opposite Red Phoenix):
Year Branch Heavenly Joy is
Zi (子, Rat) You (酉, Rooster)
Chou (丑, Ox) Shen (申, Monkey)
Yin (寅, Tiger) Wei (未, Goat)
Mao (卯, Rabbit) Wu (午, Horse)
Chen (辰, Dragon) Si (巳, Snake)
Si (巳, Snake) Chen (辰, Dragon)
Wu (午, Horse) Mao (卯, Rabbit)
Wei (未, Goat) Yin (寅, Tiger)
Shen (申, Monkey) Chou (丑, Ox)
You (酉, Rooster) Zi (子, Rat)
Xu (戌, Dog) Hai (亥, Pig)
Hai (亥, Pig) Xu (戌, Dog)

When both Red Phoenix and Heavenly Joy are activated in the same year through the Annual Pillar, it's often considered a particularly strong indicator for a happy relationship event.

Sky Horse
Tian Ma (天马) — "Heavenly Horse"

The Sky Horse star is similar to the Travel Star but carries a more expansive and ambitious energy. It indicates opportunities that come from a distance — literally or figuratively. A person with Sky Horse may find success through international connections, long-distance ventures, or opportunities that require them to step outside their comfort zone.

Lookup — based on Day Branch:
Day Branch Sky Horse is
Zi (子, Rat) Yin (寅, Tiger)
Chou (丑, Ox) Hai (亥, Pig)
Yin (寅, Tiger) Shen (申, Monkey)
Mao (卯, Rabbit) Si (巳, Snake)
Chen (辰, Dragon) Yin (寅, Tiger)
Si (巳, Snake) Hai (亥, Pig)
Wu (午, Horse) Shen (申, Monkey)
Wei (未, Goat) Si (巳, Snake)
Shen (申, Monkey) Yin (寅, Tiger)
You (酉, Rooster) Hai (亥, Pig)
Xu (戌, Dog) Shen (申, Monkey)
Hai (亥, Pig) Si (巳, Snake)

When Sky Horse is activated by a Luck Pillar or Annual Pillar, it often coincides with travel, relocation, or a significant opportunity arriving from afar.

Golden Carriage
Jin Yu (金舆) — "Golden Carriage"

The Golden Carriage star relates to comfort, material wealth, and a life of ease. It suggests that a person has access to resources and enjoys a certain level of luxury or convenience. Historically, it was associated with people who rode in carriages rather than walked — people of means and status.

Lookup — based on Day Stem:
Day Stem Golden Carriage is
Jia (甲, Yang Wood) Chen (辰, Dragon)
Yi (乙, Yin Wood) Si (巳, Snake)
Bing (丙, Yang Fire) Wei (未, Goat)
Ding (丁, Yin Fire) Shen (申, Monkey)
Wu (戊, Yang Earth) Wei (未, Goat)
Ji (己, Yin Earth) Shen (申, Monkey)
Geng (庚, Yang Metal) Xu (戌, Dog)
Xin (辛, Yin Metal) Hai (亥, Pig)
Ren (壬, Yang Water) Chou (丑, Ox)
Gui (癸, Yin Water) Yin (寅, Tiger)

When the Golden Carriage is present and well-supported, it suggests a comfortable life with good access to material resources. It's often found in the charts of people who live well, whether through their own efforts or through favourable circumstances.

A Note on Using Stars

Stars are best used as supplementary information, not as the foundation of a reading. The core framework — Day Master, Ten Gods, element interactions, chart strength — should always come first. Stars add colour and detail, but they don't replace the fundamentals.

It's also important to remember that stars are activated by timing. A star that sits in your natal chart is always there as a potential, but it really comes alive when a Luck Pillar or Annual Pillar brings the element that triggers it. A Peach Blossom star that's never activated by timing remains a latent quality rather than an active force in your life.

Finally, stars interact with each other and with the Ten Gods. A Nobleman star that coincides with your Direct Resource, for example, suggests that the helpful person in your life might be a teacher, mentor, or maternal figure. A Peach Blossom star that coincides with your Hurting Officer might indicate a passionate but turbulent romantic life. The more layers you can connect, the richer and more accurate the reading becomes.

What's Beyond This

This page, and this guide as a whole, gives you a solid foundation in Bazi. You now understand the structure (four pillars, stems, branches, hidden stems), the relationships (Ten Gods), the dynamics (element interactions), the timing (Luck Pillars and Annual Pillars), the balance (chart strength and special structures), and the symbolic layer (stars and symbols).

But Bazi doesn't end here. Beyond this foundation, there are deeper layers that experienced practitioners continue to study and refine:
